Mercy Killing

Please, please, Death take me away
Put the needle in me and pass me away
I am a sacred cow, I don’t have a Choice
Please, please, listen to my voice and rejoice
I gave my informed consent a week ago
I don’t want to become another dumb show
Please, please do not judge me for this act
I am doing it out of love, it is a fact
My dear love, You left me all alone
Please, please, I just cannot postpone
My companion in this life is the wet bed I am lying in
I cannot move, I cannot eat, and it is chagrin
Please, please, I want the needle in me right away
Suffering day and night, all I can do is to pray

My prayer is heard; tomorrow I fly to the sky
Thank you Dignitas

  1. The first hit I got on Google when I searched my topic, assisted suicide, was the English Wikipedia article. The language in the article is very informative and can sometimes be a little bit angled even though the page is supposed to be impartial. This is probably for the reason that the authors of this article have an interest in the subject. The language is academic but easy to understand, probably for reason that the audience is the whole world. The second hit I got was a web page named assisted suicide where they give information on right-to-die and euthanasia laws. This page is pro euthanasia and their language is very academic and informative. I think their audience is educated grownups and people that want to legalize assisted suicide.
My inspiration for the poem was the documentary “The Suicide Tourist”(Frontline) which tells the story of Professor Craig Ewert. Five months after being diagnosed with ALS, Ewert arrived in Switzerland for his scheduled suicide. In the documentary Ewert’s feelings and thoughts are presented in a beautiful way, and you can understand why he chose to die. My other inspiration is one of my favorite poets; Langston Hughes. He is a poet from America who was active politically and he usually put his political views in his poems. It is easier to state a problem if the message is hidden in a blameless poem. In my poem I was aiming for a language that painted a picture of a man with a big wish as well as I wanted him to feel vulnerable. It is written in a free structure but with the repeated “please, please” because I wanted his longing to be portrayed. In the end he actually dies with the help of the clinic Dignitas, and therefore he thanks the clinic, which assisted his suicide. The items that I would choose would be people with emotional attachments to this subject, because the best things to portray this topic with are people. Euthanasia is a sensitive and common discussed matter and I think stories from real people, help to bring an understanding.
