Where does the litter go?
Once upon a time in land far, far away a little boy named Damon was throwing away his leftovers from lunch break. Just as he had tipped his lunch pack over the bin he heard someone yell behind him. He quickly turned around to see his friend Louis standing there with his yell still on his lips.
- What’s going on? Damon asked surprised, and frankly a little scared.
- What’s going on! ? What do you mean; “what’s going on”? You just threw food waste in the ordinary bin, Damon!
- Ordinary bin? Is there a special, magical bin?
- No, stupid. You need to throw the food waste in the food waste bin.
Now, if there’s one thing we need to know about Damon is that he had never thought of himself as stupid and he really wasn’t either, but right now he was very confused. He hadn’t been this confused since he realized that his dad would always go away to buy something when Santa would arrive and that dad would always come back after Santa had left. How come dad always missed Santa? And why was he never sad about it? But that was another story and Damon shock his head and returned to reality.
- Louis, could you please explain what you are talking about? He said calmly to his worked up friend.
- Weren’t you listening when I had that big speech in school about how food waste ruins our planet?
Frankly, no, Damon hadn’t been listening because on that day because in the day the Louis had had his presentation it so happened to be a Thursday and for as long as Damon had remembered Thursdays where meatball day. And Damon loved meatballs. So to be honest, he hadn’t heard a word all day.
Once again Damon had to shake his head to return to reality.
- Sure, I was just wondering if you where paying attention.
- Yes, yes I was.
There was slight awkward pause where nobody really knew what was going on, when Louis finally continued.
- I’ll tell you again. What’s up with you? You’re acting like it is Thursday.
- I wish… Now tell me.
- Well, you see; food waste is a very big problem nowadays and a lot is thrown away mainly from restaurants. Over £300 can be saved year if you only recycle your food waste.
- That’s a lot of meatballs Damon said dreamy.
- Huh?
- Never mind… Keep talking
- Right, well. You can save a lot of money! And all you have to do is to put all of your food waste in a separate, paper bag instead of your ordinary plastic on and you’re there! When you later have put all your food waste into the bin and the garbage men have picked it up it goes to a specially built dumps where the miracle of recycle can begin!
Damon looked at his watch, 10 minutes until the next lesson would begin, he slowly started to walk to the classroom whilst counting hours until Thursday.
- First the waste gets pressed and milled into a very nutritious fluid which later goes into a biogas plant where special bacteria breaks down the food waste and create a clean biogas. The gas can then be upgraded into gas for cars and the goo can be used for fertilizers on farms and also as food for pigs! Instead of putting all you food waste into you ordinary bin that later goes to garbage dump that will attract odour and other yucky stuff. Isn’t that great Damon?!
- It sure is Louis! And believe me; I will think before putting food waste into the ordinary bin in the future. I wouldn’t want you to have this speech again.
THE END
A) The two first hits on Goodle/Bing when you search you topis. What kind of sites/texts are these hits? Describe the aim and language (briefly) of them.
SvaraRaderaB) Your choice of words/images in your own product. What did you use for inspiration? What kind of language were you aiming for? What items could you use as a role model?
A) The first two hits when I search on Google are mostly informative and science reports from different Universitys with a formal language. There are also pages with tips on how to recycle and use your food waste in the best way. The language on these pages are mostly informative but has a very common, ”speaking” language. The first thing that I see when I open one of these pages is ”We throw away 7.2 million tonnes food every day” so the page wants to make the reader aware of the huge problem that we have facing us if we keep throwing away all this food. The page isn’t trying to make the reader feel bad, but is simply giving tips and information about the food waste problem.
B) I was going for a simple childrens story with a very informitive motive. The vocabulary in the text is very informal because it is aimed for children, though the structure is very formal because I want to make a serious impression of the story. I want the reader to take it seriously but still think that the text is funny and intresting.
