Racist Internet memes - Facebook recap

1 kommentar:

  1. a) The first hit on “racism Internet memes” is an informative Wikipedia article about the term “meme” giving briefly details on how racism and memes are connected. However they didn’t link racism to internet memes itself in the article since it is referring to the term “meme”.
The first hit on “sexism Internet memes” is a site called memebase.com. It is a sort of search engine categorizing registered Internet memes on this webpage. This specific category that Google showed was the “sexism” category in memebase’s archive. There are mainly pictures on this site and the only text related to the pictures is a title for each individual image.
The language difference on these two pages is very different from each other. The Wikipedia article was formal and the purpose of the article was to educate about the subject “meme” whilst the other page was a combined forum and search engine not containing a lot of text. The language used on this page is mediocre and at some points grammatically incorrect, for example: “Gandalf, Y U So Sexism?!” The page is also using Internet slang like “Read 115 Trolls (and some comments)” were “Troll” means, in this case people are posting inflammatory and sometimes provocative comments.
    b) I used many pictures on the Facebook recap because it should relate to the subject “Internet memes”. I did the connection to racism/sexism by starting of the post by a provocative Internet meme. The idea was to use existing Internet memes and create a conversation that turns from a funny post to a controversial post. The purpose of this conversation was to show that racial memes are funny for those who aren’t offended and doesn’t think through other people’s perspective. However the Facebook recap is also showing that Internet memes can be very offensive.
The language is related to the people whom uses memes through the Internet; often teenage boys. Therefore the language is very relaxed and the usage of shortenings appears, for example in the posted images. There is one language difference at the end when an angry person is trying to teach the first poster a lesson through a more aggressive language, though still not entirely correct since it is very few that write correct on Facebook or on the Internet for that matter.
